What is AI visibility tracking

AI visibility tracking measures how brands, products, and authoritative URLs appear inside answers produced or mediated by artificial intelligence systems. Unlike classic web search tracking, which often collapses performance to positions in a ranked list of links, AI visibility work deals with generated prose, optional citations, refusals, and layouts that change by surface. The mechanical question is always the same: given a controlled prompt and context, what did the interface return, and how does that compare to the last run and to competitors?

The three inputs every program needs

First, prompts: the exact strings (or parameterized templates) you replay. Prompts should mirror how buyers ask questions in the wild, including disfluency and multi-intent phrasing if your category sees it. Second, context: locale, language, device class when it changes rendering, and any model or mode label the product exposes. Third, time: a schedule and a retention policy so you can study drift. Without all three, “visibility” is not reproducible: you are looking at anecdotes.

What the tracker actually stores

An AI visibility tracker persists structured observations. At minimum that is a timestamp, prompt id, outcome text or excerpt, and flags derived by rules or models (brand present, domain cited, refusal). Better implementations also store citation objects (URL, title snippet, position in the answer), tool-call metadata when the assistant browsed the web, and hashes of the prompt and answer for deduplication. That storage model is what lets engineering teams separate a true regression from a benign wording change.

What it is not

It is not a full replacement for classic web search tracking: you may still care about traditional rankings for pages that feed retrieval. It does not promise a single stable position for every query, because many AI surfaces do not expose a strict ordering. It records what an interface returned on a run; it does not certify what a model “believes” off-platform. It is also not mind-reading: if the model omits you without citing anyone, the mechanical fact is absence, not proof that a competitor paid for placement.

How teams use the output

Product marketing, SEO, and comms teams use the same tables for different views. Marketing may care about share of voice in comparative prompts. SEO may care whether owned URLs are cited when the model recommends vendors. Comms may monitor refusal or safety copy after a crisis. The mechanics stay identical; only the prompt basket and the extraction rules change.
